On the first day of an introductory college English class, we had to write a paper. When I got it back, I'd gotten an A. There was a note from the professor telling me I had a real talent for writing and should consider taking it seriously.

I took it seriously.

Prank Letters (1997–2001)

Between 1997 and 2001, I wrote prank letters to corporations. Email was brand new, companies had no playbook for handling it, and there were no AI filters. When a message came in, someone actually sat down and figured out how to respond.

So I sent absurd questions to Fortune 500 companies and got genuinely thoughtful responses. In June 1999, this website was featured as a USA Today Hot Site. For a brief moment, before "going viral" was a phrase, these letters were internet famous.
